It is with deep sadness that we must report the passing on January 10th of our dear comrade Ernesto Herrera, a lifelong revolutionary socialist from Uruguay. His enormous contributions to the movement went through many stages, most recently as the editor of the website Correspondencia de Prensa. Every comrade who ever met him was aware both of his keen commitment to Marxist principles and also his personal warmth and generosity.
We reprint here the heartfelt tribute from his collaborators at Correspondencia de Prensa, translated by the ISP.
¡Ernesto Herrera, presente!
Our comrade Ernesto Herrera, the founder, and the one responsible for our site, passed away in Montevideo on January 10.
“Always on the right side of the trenches”, as Mario said; “a great sense of class”, said Daniel from Colombia; “the most optimistic of Uruguayans”, said comrade Gaston.
We received greetings from all Latin America, from the United States, from almost all European countries. From his former comrades, from his comrades who shared struggles, meetings, moments of life, political organization, defeats and friendship.
Tough, seemingly hard, merciless in a debate, with an incredible capacity for analysis—and also tender, always interested in culture, with a book in his hand, coming out of the cinema, going to see comrades who were going through difficult times. He was a friend of the children and youngsters of the neighborhood, of the recyclers, of the car caretakers, of those who slept in the garbage containers. His enormous capacity led him to occupy international responsibilities. Plastic and construction worker. Tireless fighter for socialism.
Without him, this site is no longer the same. We will hardly have the capacity to keep it alive. Without him, it will be very difficult.
A hug, Gordo dear.
